Kovalam Beach Guide: 3 Beaches, Ayurveda, Lighthouse & Best Time to Visit

Welcome to Kovalam: Kerala's Most Famous Beach Town

Kovalam, located 16 km south of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), is Kerala's most iconic beach destination. This crescent-shaped coastline, divided into three distinct beaches by rocky headlands, has attracted travellers since the 1930s. Today, Kovalam offers a compelling mix of sunbathing, surfing, Ayurvedic treatments, and cultural exploration. This Kovalam beach guide covers everything you need for a perfect visit.

The Three Beaches of Kovalam

1. Lighthouse Beach (South)

The most popular and photogenic of Kovalam's beaches, named after the iconic red-and-white-striped lighthouse perched on the rocky headland at its southern end. The beach stretches for about 400 metres with a gentle curve of golden sand backed by coconut palms. A concrete promenade runs along the beach, lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, and budget guesthouses. This is where most of the tourist activity concentrates.

  • Lighthouse: Climb the Vizhinjam Lighthouse for panoramic coastal views. Entry INR 25, camera INR 25. Open 10 AM-5 PM (closed Mondays).
  • Swimming: Generally safe between the lifeguard flags. Lifeguards are on duty 8 AM-6 PM.
  • Surfing: Decent waves for beginners, especially during monsoon season. Board rental INR 300-500 per hour.
  • Best for: Solo travellers, budget tourists, sunset watching

2. Hawa Beach (Middle)

Separated from Lighthouse Beach by a rocky promontory, Hawa Beach (also called Eve's Beach) is a smaller, slightly less crowded stretch of sand. The beach gets its name from the sea breeze (hawa) that blows consistently here. The northern end connects to Samudra Beach via a walking path along the rocks.

  • Character: Quieter than Lighthouse Beach, popular with couples and families
  • Swimming: Relatively safe but fewer lifeguards — exercise caution
  • Food: Several beachfront restaurants serve fresh seafood — pick your fish and choose how it is cooked
  • Best for: Couples, families, those who want beach time without crowds

3. Samudra Beach (North)

The largest and least touristic of the three, Samudra Beach is a long stretch of sand popular with locals and guests of the luxury hotels that line it. The Leela Kovalam and Taj Green Cove Resort both front this beach. Waves can be stronger here, so swimming requires caution. The beach has a more natural, unspoilt feel compared to Lighthouse Beach.

  • Character: Calm, upscale, spacious
  • Access: Open to all, though the beach in front of resorts may feel private
  • Best for: Luxury travellers, long beach walks, peace and quiet

Ayurveda in Kovalam

Kovalam is one of the top Ayurveda destinations in Kerala, with treatment centres ranging from basic massage parlours to world-class residential wellness retreats. Ayurvedic treatments here follow the traditional Kerala school of Ayurveda, which emphasises oil-based therapies.

Popular Treatments

  • Abhyangam: Full-body warm oil massage — the most common introduction to Ayurveda. 60 minutes, INR 1,500-3,000.
  • Shirodhara: Warm medicated oil poured in a steady stream on the forehead. Deeply relaxing and recommended for stress relief. 45 minutes, INR 2,000-4,000.
  • Pizhichil: Warm oil squeezed over the body continuously while therapists massage. Therapeutic for joint pain and muscle stiffness. 60 minutes, INR 3,000-5,000.
  • Panchakarma: A full detoxification programme lasting 7-21 days. Requires a doctor consultation and a structured diet and treatment plan. INR 5,000-15,000 per day depending on the centre.

Recommended Ayurveda Centres

  • Dr Franklin's Panchakarma Institute: One of the most reputed centres in Kovalam, run by a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Known for genuine therapeutic treatments rather than spa-style relaxation.
  • Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra: A luxury cliff-top resort with an excellent in-house Ayurveda centre. Combines traditional treatments with five-star comfort.
  • Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort: The world's first Ayurveda resort, operating since 1990. Offers residential packages from 7 to 28 days.

Best Time to Visit Kovalam

  • October to February (Best): Clear skies, calm seas safe for swimming, pleasant temperatures of 25-32°C. This is peak season with higher prices and more crowds.
  • March to May: Hot (30-35°C) but good for budget travellers. Fewer crowds and lower hotel rates. Mornings and evenings are pleasant.
  • June to September (Monsoon): Dramatic seas with high waves — swimming is dangerous and usually prohibited. However, this is the best time for Ayurveda treatments (monsoon is considered ideal in Ayurvedic tradition). Hotel rates drop 40-60%. The rain-washed coastline has a raw beauty.

Where to Stay in Kovalam

Budget (INR 1,500-3,500 per night)

Dozens of guesthouses line the streets behind Lighthouse Beach. Rooms are basic but clean, often with balconies. Beach House, Rock Holm, and Wilson Tourist Home are reliable options.

Mid-Range (INR 4,000-10,000 per night)

Properties with pools, sea views, and better amenities. Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel offers a clifftop pool with ocean views at reasonable rates. Hotel Samudra (KTDC) is a government-run property with an unbeatable beachfront location.

Luxury (INR 15,000-40,000 per night)

The Leela Kovalam (now Raviz Kovalam) is an iconic cliff-top resort with an infinity pool overlooking the Arabian Sea. Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra offers heritage cliff-side cottages with private plunge pools. Taj Green Cove Resort combines colonial architecture with modern luxury.

Getting to Kovalam

  • From Trivandrum Airport: 15 km, 30-40 minutes by taxi (INR 600-800)
  • From Trivandrum Railway Station: 16 km, 30-45 minutes by taxi (INR 500-700)
  • From Cochin: 220 km, 4.5-5 hours by car. Can be combined with stops at Alleppey and Varkala.
  • Local transport: Auto-rickshaws between the three beaches cost INR 50-100

Practical Tips for Kovalam

  • Bargain at shops: Tourist markup on souvenirs and clothing along Lighthouse Beach is high — negotiate firmly or shop at the fixed-price cooperatives
  • Seafood dining: Choose a restaurant where you can see the fish on ice and pick your own. Prices are per kg — confirm the price before cooking to avoid surprises
  • Sun safety: The tropical sun is strong even on cloudy days. Use SPF 50 and reapply after swimming
  • Water safety: Always swim between the lifeguard flags. Undercurrents can be strong, especially at Samudra Beach and during monsoon months
  • Day trips: Visit Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum (16 km), Poovar Island backwaters (30 km), or Kanyakumari (85 km) for a day trip
