The Ultimate 5-Day Kerala Itinerary from Cochin
Five days is the ideal duration for a first-time visit to Kerala. It gives you enough time to experience the state's three signature landscapes β hill stations, spice country, and backwaters β without feeling rushed. This Kerala itinerary for 5 days starts and ends in Cochin, making it convenient for travellers flying in and out of Cochin International Airport.
This route is our most popular at Series Tours, refined over hundreds of trips. Every drive time, activity recommendation, and restaurant suggestion has been tested and updated for 2026.
Day 1: Arrive Cochin β Drive to Munnar
Morning: Cochin Airport to Munnar
Distance: 130 km | Drive time: 4-4.5 hours | Route: NH85 via Adimali
Collect your rental car with driver at Cochin airport and head straight to Munnar. The drive is scenic, particularly the final 40km from Adimali where the road climbs through tea plantations with 45+ hairpin bends. Stop at Cheeyappara Waterfalls (2 hours from Cochin) for photos and fresh pineapple from roadside vendors.
Afternoon: Check in and Explore
Arrive in Munnar by early afternoon. After checking into your hotel, visit the Tea Museum (entry INR 100, closed Mondays) to learn about Munnar's colonial tea history. The museum includes a working tea processing demonstration. End the afternoon with a walk through the tea gardens near your hotel β most Munnar properties are surrounded by plantations.
Evening
Watch the sunset from Pothamedu Viewpoint (5km from Munnar town) overlooking layers of tea-covered hills. Dinner at a local restaurant β try the Kerala-style fish curry with appam.
Stay: Munnar | Budget: INR 2,000-4,000 | Mid-range: INR 5,000-8,000 | Luxury: INR 12,000-25,000
Day 2: Munnar Full Day
Morning: Eravikulam National Park
Start early (park opens at 7:30 AM) to visit Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr mountain goat. Entry: INR 125 per adult. The park operates a shuttle bus system from the entrance to the viewing area (1.5km walk). Expect to spend 2-3 hours. The Tahr are remarkably unafraid of humans and often graze just metres from the walking path.
Midday: Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point
Drive to Mattupetty Dam (13km from Munnar), where you can take a speedboat ride on the reservoir (INR 300 per person, 20 minutes). Continue to Echo Point (15km from Munnar), a scenic lake surrounded by hills where your voice bounces back from the opposite mountain face.
Afternoon: Top Station
Head to Top Station (32km from Munnar, 1.5-hour drive), the highest point in Munnar at 1,880m. On clear days, the views stretch across the Western Ghats into Tamil Nadu's plains. Visit before 2 PM as clouds typically roll in by afternoon. The road to Top Station passes through some of Munnar's most dramatic scenery.
Evening: Kolukkumalai Tea Estate (Optional)
If time permits, arrange a jeep safari to Kolukkumalai, the world's highest organic tea estate. The jeep ride itself is an adventure on steep dirt tracks. Tea tasting sessions cost INR 200-300 per person.
Stay: Munnar (same hotel)
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady
Morning: Drive to Thekkady
Distance: 90 km | Drive time: 3-3.5 hours | Route: Via Bodimettu and Kumily
The drive from Munnar to Thekkady passes through some of Kerala's most beautiful countryside β cardamom and pepper plantations replace tea gardens as you descend from Munnar and approach the spice belt. Stop at a roadside spice shop to buy fresh cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon at wholesale prices (much cheaper than tourist shops).
Afternoon: Periyar Lake Boat Ride
Check into your hotel and head to Periyar Tiger Reserve for the KTDC boat ride on Periyar Lake (INR 205 per person for the upper deck, 1.5 hours). The boat cruise offers excellent chances of spotting wild elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, and various bird species coming to the water's edge. The 2:30 PM departure tends to have the best wildlife sighting rates.
Evening: Spice Garden Tour
Visit a spice plantation (INR 300-500 per person including guided tour) where you can see pepper, cardamom, vanilla, nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon growing in their natural habitat. The guides explain traditional uses and let you taste fresh spices. Most tours end with a complimentary cup of fresh spice tea.
Night: Kathakali Performance
Several cultural centres in Kumily (the town adjacent to Thekkady) offer Kathakali performances (INR 300-400, 1.5 hours) starting at 6:30 PM. Arrive 30 minutes early to watch the elaborate make-up application β it is fascinating in itself.
Stay: Thekkady/Kumily | Budget: INR 1,500-3,000 | Mid-range: INR 4,000-7,000 | Luxury: INR 10,000-20,000
Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey β Houseboat Cruise
Morning: Drive to Alleppey
Distance: 140 km | Drive time: 4 hours | Route: Via Kottayam
Leave Thekkady by 7:30 AM to reach Alleppey by noon for your houseboat boarding. The drive descends from the Western Ghats through rubber plantations and paddy fields. Stop at Kottayam for a quick tea break.
Noon: Board Your Houseboat
The Alleppey houseboat experience is the highlight of most Kerala trips. Board at the Alleppey jetty by noon. Lunch is served on board β fresh Kerala fish curry, rice, sambar, and vegetables prepared by your onboard cook. The boat then cruises through Vembanad Lake and the narrow canals of Kuttanad, passing paddy fields, coconut groves, and village churches.
Afternoon and Evening
Spend the afternoon on the upper deck (if your boat has one) watching village life drift by. The boat anchors by 5:30 PM at a designated spot. Enjoy tea and snacks as the sun sets over the backwaters. Dinner is served at 7:30 PM β request the local speciality karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish grilled in banana leaf) when you book. Fall asleep to the gentle sound of water lapping against the hull.
Stay: Houseboat | Deluxe AC: INR 7,000-12,000 | Premium: INR 14,000-20,000 | Luxury: INR 22,000-35,000
Day 5: Alleppey to Cochin β Fort Kochi
Morning: Disembark and Drive to Cochin
Distance: 55 km | Drive time: 1.5 hours
After breakfast on the houseboat, disembark by 9:30 AM. Drive to Fort Kochi, the historic heart of Cochin. This charming neighbourhood blends Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Indian influences in its architecture, cuisine, and culture.
Late Morning: Fort Kochi Heritage Walk
Explore on foot: visit the Chinese Fishing Nets (iconic cantilevered fishing nets of Chinese origin), St. Francis Church (India's oldest European church, built 1503), and Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace, entry INR 5). Wander through the atmospheric lanes lined with art galleries, antique shops, and cafes.
Afternoon: Jew Town and Spice Market
Walk to Jew Town to visit the Paradesi Synagogue (built 1568, entry INR 10, closed Friday-Saturday) and browse the spice and antique shops lining the narrow street. The aroma of fresh spices fills the entire lane. This is a great place to pick up gifts β quality spices, brass lamps, and handloom fabrics.
Evening: Sunset and Departure
If your flight is late, catch the sunset at the Chinese Fishing Nets β fishermen operate the nets at dusk, and you can buy fresh catch and have it cooked at one of the shacks nearby. Transfer to Cochin airport (35km, 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic).
